RoboMaster S1
A robot he assembles from parts and programs himself — not a finished toy that rolls around.
The S1 ships as 46 components he builds into a robot, then programs in Scratch or Python. It reads line-following sensors, runs computer-vision routines, and drives with real telemetry, so 'why did it do that' turns into a debugging session instead of a shrug. He can duel other S1s or set it loose on autonomous challenges he writes himself. Skip it if he's under about ten or needs a finished-toy payoff on day one — this one rewards patience.
